Bland Diet for Dogs

bland

If your dog has been vomiting and or having GI distress, your vet may prescribe a bland diet as part of its treatment.

  • You may be first instructed to withhold water or food for the next 12 hours.
  • After vomiting has stopped for 12 hours, offer small amounts  water.  Increase as long as there is no more vomiting, then begin a bland diet.

A bland diet includes food that is easy to digest such as white rice, boiled chicken and cottage cheese.  They can be offered separately or combined.

  • Offer small amounts, about ½ cup at a time or less, 4-5 times per day.
  • Provided there is no more vomiting, slowly decrease the bland diet and increase your regular or new dog food.
  • A bland diet is usually recommended for 3-5 days,
  • If your dog starts vomiting again or has diarrhea, contact your vet for further instructions.

General feeding recommendations

    • NO table food or scraps
    • NO rawhides or bones
    • Avoid fatty meats like pork, bacon, or hamburger which can cause pancreatitis.
    • Feed a good diet based on recommendations by your vet health care team.  Just because it is expensive, doesn’t mean it is always the best! Cheap food can also contain dyes or fillers that are not healthy. A balanced nutrition is key to a long life.
